Ingredients:

What’s in the tea?

Oatstraw forms the foundation for this tea. Hildegard of Bingen called oatstraw her happiness herb and for good reason. Oatstraw is a mild grass full of supportive nutrients, trace minerals, and vitamins. It’s a calming herb for the central nervous system and is especially good for a body that carries deep-rooted fatigue. In this blend, oatstraw combines with Tulsi for a rejuvenating herbal duo. Tulsi is considered to be a mild and safe adaptogen for all seasons of life. Not only does it have anti-oxidant qualities, but it is known to recalibrate the body, bringing it to a place of centered calm.

Lemongrass and lemon balm bring a gentle calming vibe, for both of these herbs are relaxing to anxious nerves. Lemon balm has held a place of honor in every healer’s cupboard throughout herbalist history. In Culpepper’s Complete Herbal, a fun and engaging historical book, he writes that lemon balm causes the mind and heart to become merry, revives the heart, and drives away all troublesome cares and thoughts out of the mind. Fun quotes aside, lemon balm’s lovely spirit definitely holds an important place in any tea blend that is intended to relax tension.

Freshly ground lemon peel brings its bright flavor, and blueberries complement the citrus brightness with their deep sweetness and royal hue. Lavender petals bring a sense of peace. Stevia leaf adds natural sweetness and rosehips not only round out the flavors with their fruity tartness, but add a splash of Vitamin C. The funnest part about this tea, however, is the color. Butterfly pea flowers bring a rich purple color to this tea that makes it magical to drink.

Steeping Instructions:

1 Tablespoon tea per 8 ounces water
Water temp: boiling
Steep time: 5-8 minutes

Tea Story:

This tea was designed for one of my boys who tends to let life wind him up as fast as a spinning top. He didn’t have any specific flavor preferences, so I chose an oatstraw base for its calming qualities and let the tea-blending winds blow where they may. I had the feeling his tea choice called for one with an imaginative, magical vibe that both matched and balanced his sparkling personality, and brought in butterfly pea flowers for their natural blue coloring abilities. The finished product has a subtle blue shimmer but ends up with a deep purple hue. It reminded me of indigo, a favorite childhood color of mine. Indigo is a mix of blue and violet and is the color of tranquility and mystery. Its velvety depth mirrors a midnight sky somewhere far away from light pollution, and that is the feeling this tea brings to the soul.

If there is a child in your life with a sensitive heart, and/or a body system that is prone to react to over-stimulation, this blend may be a good choice. The blueberries came from the Eastern Shore of the US this summer, and they are dried without the addition of any sulfites or other ingredients, leaving only a simple, fresh blueberry flavor. As with all the teas that were designed for my boys, I drink them as much as they do.
