What’s in the tea?
Dandelion root is a wonderful over-all tonic, and is known to be a digestive aid. Marshmallow root is quite soothing to the digestive system because of its gentle mucilaginous qualities. Tulsi, otherwise known as holy basil, is a mild and safe adaptogen for all seasons of life. It is rich in anti-oxidants and has an immediate calming effect upon the body, helping to bring it back to a state of homeostasis. It eases the effects of oxidative stress, and is also known to soothe anxiety.
This healing herbal trio comes together into a robust black tea base of Assam. Named after its birthplace, the Assam region of northeastern India, Assam tea is a popular breakfast tea with a rich and malty feel. It is wonderful all by itself, but it also holds up well to the addition of other plants and flavors.
Fennel seeds bring additional tummy-soothing properties to this tea blend, and complement the rich, malty Assam. Orange peel, cinnamon, and cloves accent this blend’s warm energy with just enough spice to bring liveliness, and red sunflower petals dance throughout. These edible petals come from the Mexican sunflower plant. They bring the cheery energy of the sun-loving sunflower to this tea blend.
Perhaps you and the day can now be friends.
Steeping Guidelines:
2 teaspoons tea to 8 ounces water
Water temp: boiling
Steep time: 4-6 minute
A note: This tea holds up wonderfully for a second steep. Simply increase the steeping time by a minute or two, and enjoy a second cup. Some of the flavoring botanicals I use really shine in the second cup, when the strong burst of energy from the black tea and roots have mellowed.
Tea Story:
I was not a morning tea person for years. Coffee, and a lot of it, was the only thing that convinced me the day was worth my presence. Though I had been transitioning to drinking tea throughout the day, tea in the morning just didn’t match that strong coffee aroma and bracing caffeine kick that I was used to. However, in my early thirties my body began to reject coffee more and more, and I began looking elsewhere for a strong morning wake-up sip. Having lived with digestive system issues for most of my life, I also wanted something that could possibly help with that, and Roots & Wings was born. I first introduced it to a dear friend of mine on a weekend girls’ trip. (Yes, I am that person that packs a bag of tea before anything else.) She loved it, and her encouragement convinced me that this one may be loved by others as well.
I am now able to enjoy a good cup of coffee again, for which I’m grateful. But this tea is still what I reach for in the morning.
“May I have the courage today
To live the life that I would love,
To postpone my dream no longer
But do at last what I came here for
And waste my heart on fear no more.”― John O’Donohue, To Bless the Space Between Us
