Origin

I once saw a dancer, a woman
who pulled fire
deep into her lungs
and shedding her skin
danced on the exhale

In timeless night, face
radiant in the baptism
of moonrise, summoning
infinity in drumbeat
and Jamaican rum.

I once saw a preacher, a man
who pulled faith
deep into his lungs
and shedding his skin
prayed on the exhale

In sleepless night, face
radiant in the baptism of
a moonlit altar, calling
down heaven incarnate
in blood and water.

Questions searing lungs
in fire, in words, in
the groaning which cannot
be uttered, sacrament
of skin and soul un-caging,
aching, both listening
for an answer, matter reaching
for essence, for each other, both
reaching, we are all reaching
for origin.
